To consider what enterprise architecture means, it is important to understand its origin. All architecture within information technology can trace its ancestry back to the lessons learned from building architecture. Throughout time, there have been building architects who guided the construction of buildings even though the profession itself is less than 200 years old. In cultures past, people used the same term for builder and architect. Craftsman such as a carpenter or mason designed building structures, hired laborers, bought materials and managed the development from digging the trench for the foundation to building the roof.
